Summer expedition to Honduras in full swing!
Summer is here and the Canopy Access OpWall season is in full swing!
We're on the 2024 Operation Wallacea expedition to Cusuco National Park, Honduras. Known for its incredible biodiversity and abundance of endemic species, it really is an ecological heaven. Full of species from every taxa, there’s such a wealth of ecological richness with not a fraction of them described by science!
Everyday we rise to the sounds of the jungle waking up with all kinds of weird and wonderful sounds, songs and calls in the trees around basecamp.
Students, scientists and staff have joined the Canopy Access team on guided adventures high up into the cloud-forest canopy and climbing forty metres up into some truly special towering pines gives us a unique view out over the forest.
In the tree tops we get to meet some of Cusuco’s wildlife. Toucans, flycatchers, hummingbirds, birds of prey and specialist warblers have been great to see. And then there are lizards, all kinds of funky invertebrates and a wealth of amazing plants.
We’ve climbed in sunshine, rain, and mist and one of the highlights has been watching Swallow-tailed kites wheel above us as they hunt flying leaf-cutter ant queens.
With over 3 weeks left we’re sure to see lots more amazing sights on our adventures into the giant pines!
